Michigan sportsbooks handled a record wagering amount through some of BestAppBet’s top-rated sportsbooks. $478.3 million, to be exact. It wasn’t just bets handled where the Great Lakes State had success. It also broke records regarding gross gaming revenue (GGR). The online sports betting GGR was an impressive $54.1 million. This was a huge increase of 123% compared to the previous month.
The biggest operator in terms of the handle was Barstools Sports. This sportsbook’s contribution was $41.3 million. This was followed by Caesars Sportsbook, PointsBet, WynnBET, and Fox Bet.
Michigan iGaming Numbers
Online casinos didn’t perform quite as well as they have done in the past. Online casinos and poker rooms did still create $107.6 million in GGR. However, this was not a new record. It actually dropped by 2% from the previous month. This is easy to explain as there is one fewer day in November than October. The fact that the GGR rate per day was up in November shows this was not the stalling of growth.
The poker rooms and online casinos have generated $992.2 million in GGR for Michigan in 2021. The state is very close to the $1 billion mark and will hope to hit it in December.
The online casino and poker market leaders are quite different from those in the sportsbook market. BetMGM was the leader for GGR, with a haul of $40.1 million. DraftKings was significantly behind this in second, with $16.8 million.
What Caused a Record-Breaking Month?
The NBA season kicked off in the middle of October, but bettors got a whole month of wagering opportunities through November. College basketball got underway in November. However, it is still a bit of a surprise considering the most significant betting market in the US is the NFL. There were only four NFL weekends in November compared to the five in October. The betting handle still increased by 2.2%.
Perhaps the excellent form of the Michigan Wolverines and the Michigan State Spartans in football encouraged more betting. Whatever the case, it bodes well for Michigan in the future that the basketball season and the form of its college teams have helped boost its betting handle.
