Colorado’s Gambling History

In November, 2019 the people of Colorado voted on Proposition DD. This approved legal sports betting in Colorado. Now the state offers:

  • Casinos (tribal and commercial properties)
  • Retail sports betting
  • Online sports betting
  • State lottery
  • Horserace betting (online, retail and off-track)

There are nearly 40 casinos in Colorado. Most based around small gambling towns in the mountains. Such as Black Hawk, Central City and Cripple Creek. But only online sports betting is legal. Online casinos and poker are not currently legal in Colorado. Legalizing them does not seem to be in the state’s priority right now.

Legal Sports Betting in Colorado

Back in November 2019 voters passed Proposition DD by a 51-48 margin. The proposition was passed with a slim margin of around 20,000 votes. This measure legalized sports betting in Colorado. A few months later, the state’s first sports betting apps went live in May 2020. Colorado’s commercial casinos had to apply for a license to offer sports betting. In addition, the tribal casinos in the state had to negotiate a separate provision.

Proposition DD legalizes online sports betting. So many casinos in the state have formed partnerships with online sportsbook operators. This type of partnership brings to Colorado the top sportsbook technologies and expertise. While the local casino licenses regulate all betting activities, finances and player protection. Currently, there are several major guidelines to Colorado sports betting rules:

  • Sports betting can only be offered under a state casino license.
  • A master license allows the holder to have a retail sportsbook, as well as an online sportsbook site and app.
  • A license holder can have two partners and two separate operations (for retail and online).
  • The state will collect a 10% tax on net wagers.
  • Betting on eSports and high school sports is not allowed.
  • Mobile registration is allowed from anywhere in the state.
  • The regulating body for sports betting is the Colorado Limited Gaming Commission.

Types of Bets Offered in Colorado

The sports betting operators in Colorado offer pretty much the standard type of wagers like anywhere else:

  • Spreads: Also known as point spreads or spread betting. This type of bet will let you wager on a team ‘covering the spread’. Which means by how many points of a margin your team will win the match.
  • Moneylines: The ‘line’ is usually based on a $100 wager. Where the stronger team is ‘below the line’ with a negative sum. And the underdog is ‘above the line’ with a positive sum. This is how much you will win if predicting the winner correctly.
  • Totals: Totals are a wager based on the total number of points scored by both teams in a game. It’s also known as over/unders.
  • Propositions: Prop bets are wagers on different events that aren’t the actual game loss/win result (e.g. goals scored by a certain player, first to score, yards covered, etc.). Prop bets in Colorado are only allowed on pro sports (not on college sports).
  • Live Betting: Live betting will let you place bets during the actual sporting event.
  • Parlays: Parlays are a number of different bets that are tied into one wager. All bets need to be won in order for a parlay to win.
  • Teasers: These are a form of parlay that include spread betting. It reduces the risk somewhat, but payouts are relatively low.
  • Future Bets: Future bets let you predict the outcome of a whole season. For example which player will win the season MVP, which team will win the championships etc.

Betting Markets Offered in Colorado

Colorado has a population of around 5.7 million. With millions of sports fans across the state, the Continental State has great ambassadors in most major US sports leagues. But you can bet on many more sports beside the NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL. Colorado sports betting apps let you bet on college sports like NCAA football and basketball. You can also bet on world soccer, tennis, golf, motor sports, rugby and many more events and competitions. But if you are from the Colorado and into sports betting, you are definitely going to back the local teams.

  • Denver Broncos (NFL): The legendary Broncos who are usually in the NFL playoffs and have a history of three Super Bowl wins.
  • Denver Nuggets (NBA): Previously known as the Denver Rockets. The Nuggets compete in the NBA’s Western Conference Northwest Division. They usually make it to the playoffs.
  • Colorado Rockies (MLB): The Rockies are one of the most consistent MLB teams since their introduction in 1993. In 2007 they got to the World Series, but lost to the Boston Red Sox.
  • Colorado Avalanche (NHL): The Colorado Avs won the Stanley Cup twice since moving to the state in 1995.
  • Colorado Rapids (MLS): Colorado has a longtime representation in America’s top flight of soccer. The Rapids play in the Western Conference of Major League Soccer.

Prohibited Bets in Tennessee

Like most other US states that allow legal betting, there are a few prohibited sports you cannot place bets on in Colorado. You are not allowed to bet on high school sports. And there is no betting allowed on video game competitions. This is unless the competition is approved by a sport governing body. The specific details are still unclear about this. So many eSports fans are waiting to see how things pan out. Lastly, Colorado doesn’t permit prop betting on college sports.
