Michigan Gambling History Expansion
With a long history of land-based casinos that is woven into the state’s significant Native American history, Michigan currently has 23 Tribal casinos. In addition, there are also 3 commercial casinos in the Detroit area. Michigan is also home to one of the largest, most acclaimed state lotteries in the US.
But the new expansion into sports betting, as well as casino and poker online sites and mobile betting apps took Michigan’s gambling into an entirely new era. Retail sports betting was launched in the state on March 11, 2020. And Daily Fantasy Sports operators are also becoming licenced by the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) which is the regulatory body for gambling in the Great Lakes State.
Michigan Online Gambling Legislation
Michigan’s prominent lottery has been operating legally in the state since 1972, and the Michigan iLottery has been operating online since 2014. On December 20, 2019 Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed into law House Bill 4311, the Lawful Internet Gaming Act which regulates Michigan online gambling beyond lottery.
Now the state includes more forms of legal online gambling that can be accessed from anywhere in Michigan through a computer or mobile device. You don’t have to be a Michigan resident in order to bet online in the state. As long as you are over the age of 21 and physically present within state limits, you can download a casino or sports betting app and start placing your bets in minutes.
Here are a few main points worth noting from Michigan’s Lawful Internet Gaming Act:
- Michigan’s 26 land-based casinos are owned and operated by 15 entities. Each of these is allowed to offer one online gambling brand that will include casino, poker, sports betting and fantasy sports.
- The licence application fees are between $50,000 and $100,000.
- Taxes are charged at between 20% and 28% for online casinos and poker.
- Taxes are charged at 4% for sports betting.
- Online sports books and casino operators can deduct a portion of their bonus expenses from the Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR) – which is the base for calculating their tax.

Types of Bets Offered in Michigan
If you are placing sports bets in Michigan in a physical venue, through a website or on a sports betting mobile app, you can choose from a wide range of bets:
- Money Line Bets: Usually based on a $100 baseline with the stronger side being ‘below the line’ and marked with a negative sign. The favorite team’s number shows how much you need to bet in order to win $100. The underdog team is marked with a positive sign, and the number next to it shows how much you can win on a $100 stake.
- Proposition Bets: Also knows as ‘Props’ are wagers on different events other than the game’s final outcome. Props can be placed on the first team to score a touchdown, a certain player to bat for a home run, etc.
- Totals Bets: Also known as over/under bets, totals are based on the total points scored by all teams. You will need to place a bet on the score being either above or below the final score predicted by the sportsbook operator.
- Spread Bets: Are wagers on the team winning or losing by the point margin.
- Live Bets: Also known as ‘in-play betting’ lets you place wagers during the actual sporting event. The risks and odds are adjusted in real time based on data feeds.
- Parlays: One bet that combines several individual wagers (also called ‘legs’). All the legs need to win in order for the Parlay to be a winning wager. In which case, the payout will be larger than the total payout sum of the legs.
- Teasers: A Parlay that also combines spread betting. Teasers have lower risk, and as a result lower payouts than a standard Parlay.
- Future Bets: Are wagers on distant outcomes, usually at the end of a season or period. This can be a team to win the Stanley Cup or Conference Championship, a player to win the MVP, etc.

The Detroit Pistons are considered to be one of the league’s most known teams, probably due to the ‘bad boy’ reputation they earned in 80s and 90s. Still, the Pistons are also known as a hard working team. They are often featured in the playoffs and have won three NBA championships.
