Tennessee Sports Betting Guide 2021 – BestAppBet
It came to many as a surprise that Tennessee decided to join the prestige club of US states that have legalized online gambling. The Volunteer state was never known as one of the gambling-friendly states. So the state’s legislators’ decision to legalize online sports betting was an unexpected turn that brought good news to operators and Tennesseans alike.
Gambling online in Tennessee is very unique due to the fact that it’s the first US state that offers remote sports betting only. As there are no brick and mortar casinos or gambling facilities in the state, all Tennessee sports-betting legislation is based on online gambling through state-licenced sportsbook websites and mobile apps.

Legal Sports Betting in Tennessee
On May 24, 2019 Tennessee Governor Bill Lee returned to the state’s General Assembly Bill 0001, Tennessee Sports Gaming Act which legalizes online sports wagering in the state. Gov. Lee did not sign the bill as he philosophically objects gambling. However even though it was returned unsigned, online gambling became legal in Tennessee that day.
Under the new bill, an annual payment for an operator licence will be $750,000 and the state will also charge a 20% gambling tax on gross-wagering revenues. Operators will be required to purchase official data from sports leagues in order to manage and offer in-play betting.
Anyone over the age of 21 and physically present within state limits will be able to place bets. This includes both Tennessee residents and visitors to the state. Coaches, staff and professional athletes, and employees of government and bodies that regulate the state’s gambling are not allowed to wager.
The Unique Aspects of Tennessee’s Gambling Law
The Tennessee sports betting legal bill is unique in more ways than one. Notably, it is the first US state that will licence and regulate online-only sports betting with no land-based gambling infrastructure and expertise it can leverage. This is because the Tennessee has traditionally been opposed to gambling and does not allow brick and mortar casinos.
Another point that makes Tennessee gambling unique is that it’s the first state in the country that requires operators to sign commercial agreements for in-play betting with major data companies and sports leagues. This was the result of an intensive 2-year lobbying effort led by major leagues like the NBA and MLB. So the good news is that Tennessee will be used as a testbed for close cooperation and support of US major leagues with online gambling providers.
