College Football Week 3 – 6 Lossing Teams

This college football weekend has been a pretty wild one. Although The Crimson Tide and Gators did well, and the Bearcats kept their winning streak going, not everyone was happy in NCAAF country. Check out our list of college football teams that didn’t do too well in NCAAF Week 3.

1. The ACC

No conference took a bigger blow in college football last weekend than the ACC.

From Miami’s 21-point loss at the hands of Michigan State to major programs like Clemson, North Carolina, Pittsburgh, and Virginia Tech, all putting up poor performances against beatable opponents. The ACC took quite the beating. In fact, the only team in the ACC that seemed to have any competitive spirit was Boston College, who just moved up to 3-0 after a huge win at Temple.

2. Clemson

This leads us to our next point; “what’s wrong with Clemson?”. For the second straight week, the Tigers just narrowly escaped with a victory, this time against a Georgia Tech team that featured one of the worst offensive performances in ACC play in years. Clemson finished with 284 yards, the fewest in league play since gaining 190 yards against the Yellow Jackets in 2014. In fact, the last time Clemson was held under 300 yards in back-to-back games against the Power Five was in the final two games of the 2010 season. To give you an idea, the team’s starting quarterback, DJ Uiagalelei, has 349 total passing yards through 3 games. Whereas the team’s predecessor, Trevor Lawrence, exceeded that total 4 times in 2020 alone. Is it simply poor quarterback play? Or is there something bigger going on?

3. Florida State

Seminole nation surely figured that their heartbreaking loss to Jacksonville State last week would be the low point of the season. The team is now 0-3 to start the season, marking the first time since 1976 for the legendary program. The worst part is that after giving up over 480 yards and 27 first downs to Wake Forest, it feels like the only obvious win remaining on the schedule is Massachusetts at home on October 23rd. The only questions left are; How bad will it get for FSU and coach Mike Norvell? And will they manage to avoid losing more than 8 games for the first time since 1974? Only time will tell.

4. University of Connecticut

Another team that’s got off to a rough start in 2021 is the UConn Huskies. Not only did the team fail to score any points in either of their first two games against Fresno State and Purdue. But they also started off the season with an embarrassing 38-28 loss to Holy Cross. And even when things started to look up for the Huskies this past weekend against Army, they still got beat. Connecticut did manage to score 21 points in the second half against Army, which is a step in the right direction. But they fell apart late in the game, giving up 52 points and nearly 400 rushing yards to the Black Knights when it was all said and done. Simply put, the Huskies will need to completely revamp their game plan going into Week 4 if they hope to have any success on the field.

5. University of Colorado Boulder

The Buffaloes are one of the surprise Power Five schools of 2020 that will enter Pac-12 play with a 1-2 record after being blown out 30-0 by Minnesota. As if this massive point deficit wasn’t bad enough, the team also lost the week before Texas A&M in a heartbreaker (10-7). Colorado enters Week 4 following two devastating losses, with little to no evidence of improvement. Especially after the Buffaloes just allowed 441 yards of offense (277 on the ground) and gained just 63 yards on 45 plays for themselves. To make matters worse, they haven’t been shut out since losing 28-0 to Washington State in 2017 or been held under 100 yards of offense since gaining 76 yards in a 48-0 loss to Stanford in 2012. So, keep your expectations low for the Buffaloes in 2021.

6. Marshall University

Marshall losing to East Carolina is bad enough, let alone that the team put up almost 650 yards on offense, held a significant lead at halftime, and still lost the game. The Thundering Herd were undefeated coming into the weekend, and we’re even up by 17 points (38-21) heading into the fourth quarter. It seems pretty hard to lose at this point, right? Unfortunately, the team also allowed ECU to score with 7:31 left to make it 38-28, and then again with 2:31 remaining to make it 38-35. Oh, and then the game-winning drive went 53 yards in 1:36 and ended with a short touchdown run to give the Pirates the lead with under a minute left in the game. While much of the loss can be attributed to the miraculous play of ECU, this marks the first time since 2012 that a Conference USA team had that many yards and still lost. So, it’s still a defining moment for the program and one that they’re surely hoping to change heading into Week 4.

7. Boise State

Boise State has had one of the easiest schedules thus far, starting their season off with Central Florida and Oklahoma State. The issue is that even after they held the Cowboys to just 87 yards passing, they still managed to lose the game 21-20. Despite leading the majority of the game (10-0 in the first quarter, 19-7 in the second). And the week prior, they fell to a very beatable Central Florida team. It’s safe to say that Andy Avalos may be in for one long season.
