7 College Football Winning Teams
What a wild weekend of college football this was. The Alabama Crimson Tide took a commanding 21-3 lead in the first half against Florida, only to allow the Gators to close the gap in the fourth quarter, and narrowly escape with a victory. While SEC powerhouse, Oklahoma Sooners, struggled to put away an old-time rival in the Nebraska Cornhuskers, and the Cincinnati Bearcats continued their unbeaten streak moving into Week 4.
Check out our list of Week 3 NCAAF Winners
1. University of Alabama
Despite the ‘less-than-desirable’ method of gaining a win, the Tide’s big night in Gainesville should still be celebrated. There’s no question that Alabama has some loose ends to clean up, not the least of which includes the need to fix their running game under new OC, Bill O’Brien. As just less than a year ago, the Crimson Tide held the best rushing offense in the entire country. And now, Alabama’s backfield is coming off a game in which the team put up 91 total rushing yards on 28 carries, leading to an abysmal rushing average of 3.9 yards per carry. Which has led to some serious questions as to whether or not the Tide can repeat as national champions. Regardless, they remain the team to beat heading into a pivotal Week 4 of college football.
2. University of Cincinnati
Cincinnati has long been a program on the rise, and nothing was more evident after a defining win against a talented Indiana bunch this past weekend. In what became a 38-24 victory, the Bearcats displayed extreme grit and determination throughout the entire game. Climbing back from 14-0 in the second quarter, to a back-and-forth third quarter, only to cap it off with a rowdy fourth quarter finish, and officially knock off the Hoosiers. However, the real test will come this week when Cincinnati travels to Notre Dame in an attempt to notch a second win against Power Five competition. No matter the result, nobody can deny that Cincinnati came to play in 2021.
3. University of Michigan
Talk about a hot start, Michigan’s first three games have masterfully displayed the Wolverines’ powerful ground game and led many Michigan faithful to think that ‘this could be the year.’ UM used their incredible rushing attack to wrap up non-conference play with a dominant 63-10 win against Northern Illinois. Allowing four of their players to finish with at least 40 yards on the ground, three of which scored at least twice. The offense finished with over 370 yards total and 8 touchdowns on 48 carries. Giving the Wolverines 1,056 rushing yards and 15 scores through their first three games of the season…
4. Michigan State
Now, this may be something Wolverines’ fans want to plug their ears for, but their in-state rivals also continue to impress, but this time under their second-year head coach, Mel Tucker. Maybe it has something to do with where all the ‘experts’ projected the team would finish (near the bottom), compared to where they are now (3-0). Regardless, nobody can take away from the fact that the Spartans are undefeated through three weeks with two Power Five wins after knocking off Miami (Fla.) 38-17 on the road. Tucker’s exceptional recruiting and roster management has this team beautifully positioned to make a run to secure bowl eligibility by the end of October.
5. Kansas State
Many Wildcats fans would have assumed that the team would struggle with their starting quarterback, Skylar Thompson, sidelined. Well, think again. Not only did Kansas State handily beat down on Nevada 38-17, but they showed their ability to divert their game plan such unexpected circumstances arise. With Thompson sidelined, the Wildcats showed off their running chops to loosen up the Nevada defense and put up five scoring drives lasting 8 or more plays. Kansas State finished with 269 yards rushing and 4 touchdowns while holding the Wolf Pack to just 25 yards on 23 carries. A truly dominant display on both sides of the ball.
6. University of Southern California
Even when the media mentions USC, it generally comments on their seemingly consistent number of coaching vacancies. However, things were different this past weekend when interim head coach, Donte Williams, stepped up to the plate. After replacing Clay Helton earlier in the week, Williams helped the Trojans march back from 14-0 in the second quarter to beat down on Washington State 45-14. As if making up for this deficit wasn’t impressive enough, they did it all without their starting quarterback, Kedon Slovis. Instead, the backup, Jaxson Dart took over, and led the team to a massive Week 3 victory, finishing with 391 passing yards and 4 touchdowns.
7. Wake Forest
Dave Clawson has endured an exceptional amount of success in his 7 years with the team, leading the program to 6 straight bowl games and a pair of eight-win seasons. Now 3-0, the Demon Deacons seem destined for a Top 25 finish after barely breaking a sweat in their 35-14 demolition of Florida State. Not only are they a disciplined bunch that seems more focused than ever, but they also have a series of very winnable games ahead of them (before they run into stiffer competition in November). One thing’s for sure, and Dave Clawson may finally receive the national attention he’s due by the end of the year if the team keeps up their winning ways.
