Top 10 NFL Quarterback Draft Prospects

The Quarterback job is usually a popular position subject to plenty of speculation, especially when the draft is about to occur. Things are getting even more exciting this year, as there is a possibility of at least five QBs featuring in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft.

Interestingly, it’s pretty likely that all notable players like Zach Wilson, Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields, Mac Jones, and Trey Lance will clinch their spots among the first ten picks.

While most people pay attention to the first-round QBs, others deserve to be recognized in this year’s draft. After all, through history, we’ve all learned that there are a couple of the top picks that end up being a disappointment, and a second or third-round pick could end up being a 10-year starter.

That said, we’ve outlined for you our top-10 QBs for 2021.

NFL Draft 2021: Top 10 Quarterback Rankings

1. Trevor Lawrence, Clemson

Trevor Lawrence

After leading Clemson to the National Championship while still a freshman, Trevor Lawrence has risen to the limelight, and most people rank him as their No. 1 pick. While playing for the Tigers for three years, Lawrence had a pass completion rate of 66.6%. He also accounted for 108 TDs (90 throwing, 18 rushing), not forgetting that he threw just 17 INTs. Lawrence is about 6.6 and weighs 213 pounds with good mobility and big arms to push off his opponents. He seems to have all it takes. With two losses in his resume, Lawrence has a proven track record not just as a winner but also as a leader. Whether he is the best QB remains unproven, but his top-pick credentials are incomparable.

2. Zach Wilson, BYU

Zach Wilson

Zack Wilson’s first two seasons while playing for BYU were not as appealing, but this changed in 2020 as he broke out in a big way. Wilson threw 3,692 yards, 33 TDs, with only three INTs. His pass completion rate stood at 73.5%. He also added an extra 254 yards and grounded 10 TDs. Despite the excellent performance, Wilson lacks an ideal size as he is 6.2 and weighs 214 pounds. But this still doesn’t mean that he is too small for the job. In 2019, he had to undergo surgery to repair his torn labrum, and medical reports indicate that this is not an issue. This is good news for the Jets as they look to sign him as second overall. There are always good reasons to fret about “one-year wonders,” however, the label is best fitted for Joe Burrow as he looked like a franchise QB as he was healthy and fit while playing for the Bengals. Wilson is different, and his exceptional performance is undeniable.

3. Justin Fields, Ohio State

Justin Fields

Fields slightly underperformed in 2020, making 3,273 passing and 484 rushing yards. He also completed 51 TDs with only three INTs. This changed later in the season with a pass rate completion of 70.2%. It is an improvement compared to 67.2% at the start of the season. Fields also posted more yards, completing 262.5 compared to 233.8. Rushing yards also improved as he recorded 47.9 compared to 34.6 at the start. Fields’ performance has been in question more than any other quarterback leading up to the draft. Some are curious to know about his leadership and work ethic abilities. However, after measuring about 6.3 and weighing 226 pounds and running a 4.45 40-yard dash, his physical tools prove otherwise. That said, we should expect that Fields will be among the top 10 picks.

4. Trey Lance, North Dakota State

Trey Lance

There is a lot of speculation surrounding Trey Lance as he has only started in just 17 college games, and all of these games were against FCS competition. Nonetheless, his performance in those starts proves otherwise. For instance, he didn’t throw any INT while playing as a freshman in a season that concluded with a 16-0 record alongside a trio of awards, including FCS Offensive Player of the Year, FCS Freshman of the Year, and FCS Champion Game MVP. During the high-flying season, Lance threw 2,786 years and ran for 1,100 yards. He also made 44 total touchdowns, and his pass completion rate stood at 66.9%. In his pro-day, Lance measured 6.4 and weighed 224 pounds. While he didn’t make it to run a 40-yard dash, his top speed was clocked at 21.54 mph while running a 44-yard TD run in one of the FCS National Championship games. This mark meant that he would have been recognized as the 12th fastest ball carrier in last year’s NFL and fastest among all quarterbacks. With this record, Lance, like any other QB, has all the necessary tools to wish for. Still, his inexperience makes it challenging for him among the top-level competition. On that note, he stands to be picked among the top 15 or even top five if possible. But don’t expect him to be a Day 1, let alone Year-1 starter.

5. Mac Jones, Alabama

Mac Jones

Jones hit the headlines last year at Alabama with ridiculous numbers. He recorded a 77.4% pass completion rate with 4,500 yards, 41 TDs, and only four INTs. The common catchphrase used to overlook his performance is the fact that Jones was only playing on an NFL offense. It might be true that Crimson Tide has some of the best-skilled players and offensive linemen across the country, admittedly; the same could also be said about Joe Burrow while playing with LSU, and ultimately, he adapted well to the NFL. One of the main drawbacks of Jones is that he is seen to lack elite athleticism. But he recorded a 4.68 40-yard dash, which isn’t as bad for a QB. He is 6.3 and weighs 217 pounds, which means he has a decent size. What’s more, Jones has remarkable leadership qualities. This means that he is likely to land himself among the top 15 in the draft selection. Most people speculate that he might finish third overall to the 49ers.

6. Kyle Trask, Florida

Kyle Trask

Trask impressed many during his final season at Florida. He recorded 4,283-yard throws, 43 TDs, and eight INTs. Trask’s pass completion rate stood at 68.9%. He is a 6.5 and weighs 236 pounds, which means Trask has great size for a QB. However, his 5.10 40-yard dash makes him less athletic. And this is one of the main reasons he sits behind the five QBs featured above. He is teased about being in the second round of the draft pick, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see him start at some point this season.

7. Jamie Newman, Wake Forest/Georgia

Jamie Newman

Jamie Newman played for three years for Wake Forest. Here he played 19 games before making his transfer to Georgia, where he played only 12 games. Newman opted out of last year’s season to prepare adequately for the draft. His lack of experience makes him difficult to evaluate his performance. But for the little time he has been on the pitch, he completed 2,868 passing yards, with a 60.9% pass completion rate. He also recorded 574 rushing yards, 32 TDs, and, unfortunately, 11 INTs. Newman is a 6.3 and weighs 235 pounds, and he currently runs a 40-yard dash in the 4.7 range. It makes him more of a protégé than a sure bet. However, this might change if he lands on the right team.

8. Kellen Mond, Texas A&M

Kellen Mond

Mond definitely has plenty of experience with 46 games played. His stats were not as remarkable, but there has been an improvement throughout his senior year. His pass completion rate stands at 63.3%, with a QB rating of 146.9. Yards per attempt are 7.7, and he threw 19 TDs and only three INTs. Mond is a 6.2 and weighs 205 pounds. In terms of the 40-yard run, he recorded a 4.57. Among his incredible features is his big arm. Due to Mond’s limited capabilities, he might be a late-round pick at the draft selection.

9. Davis Mills, Stanford

Davis Mills

Mills only played 12 games in his college career, claiming that he is a somewhat understatement project. He is 6.4 and weighs 217 pounds. Mills recorded a 4.58 40-yard dash time. Moreover, he has a 65.5% pass accuracy rate. With these numbers, Mills is likely a Day 2 or a Day 3 pick, and there is a possibility that he might step up in the coming years.

10. Feleipe Franks, Arkansas

Feleipe Franks

After three rocky seasons at Florida, Franks has an incredible season at Arkansas. He had a 68.5% pass completion rate, and he posted a 17:4 TD-to-INT ratio. Franks is a 6.6 and weighs 234 pounds, which makes him an elite size pick. He recorded a 4.55 40-yard dash time. These numbers mean that Franks might be in the middle or late draft picks. Like Newman, if he signs with the right team, he will surely improve and become a great project overall.
