With the Coronavirus taking its toll on many areas of our lives, one of the major impacts on sports fans around the world was the suspension of major sports events. And so, the
NBA suspended its season and will not hold games until further notice, similar to other major American sports leagues such as the NFL, MLS, MLB and minor leagues as well.
This also means that there’s a lot less sports-betting action, where sports bettors in the US do not have too many options or events to bet on. A bit set back after the excitement of legal sports-betting bills that have been signed and came into effect in many states, enabling players to place their bets online safely and legally, using their own computer or sports betting mobile app.
Still, many of the sports leagues are finding creative ways to keep in touch with fans, this comes in the form of posting stories of how players deal with the time off and closures, showing older matches and events, and more.
The NBA Keeping In Touch with Fans
But it seems as is the NBA found an even better, more exciting way to deal with the shutdown of the league. So the top basketball players of the world’s best basketball league are actually playing the game, and competing against each other as we speak. However there are a few small differences: players are playing from their couch and not on the court, and they are holding a game controller and not a basketball.
The NBA and its player association are now hosting the NBA 2K Player Tournament, which is an Xbox One game console tournament featuring 16 active NBA stars. This is a single-elimination tournament that is aired on ESPN, with the winner of the competition gets to choose a charity that will receive a $100,000 donation from the NBA and NBPA (National Basketball Player Association) to support Coronavirus relief.
NBA 2K Tournament Structure
Each team can only be used once, and each competitor has eight NBA teams to choose from. Rounds 1 and 2 are single elimination, and the Semifinals and Finals are running the best of three.
After several games to that took place on Sunday, it’s now time for the Quarterfinals. The Quarterfinals, which are still single elimination kick off on Tuesday, 7 p.m. ET. The four players who moved to the next stage from Sunday are Montrezl Harrell (beating Domantas Sabonis); Rui Hachimura (beating Donovan Mitchell); Devin Booker (beating Michael Porter Jr.) and Andre Drummond (beating DeMarcus Cousins).
The Quarterfinal matchups will be (with respective player seed):
- Derrick Jones Jr. (16) vs. Montrezl Harrell (8)
- Devin Booker (5) vs. Rui Hachimura (13)
- Trae Young (2) vs. Deandre Ayton (10)
- Andre Drummond (6) vs. Patrick Beverley (14)
