It’s Official: William Hill Launches Sportsbook in Washington, D.C.
The gambling industry of Washington, D.C., has recently made a huge step forward. On Monday, August 3, Capital One Arena, one of the hallmarks of D.C. Chinatown and home of the Washington Capitals of The National Hockey League, finally opened a sportsbook by William Hill, the industry giant known all over the world.
All of this was a direct result of the partnership between William Hill and Ted Leonsis, the CEO of Monumental Sports & Entertainment, which introduced a new member into the not-so-plentiful market of sports betting in D.C.
Beforehand, the gamblers of District had to settle for the odds of Intralot, which faced little to no competition.
However, the William Hill sportsbook is about to shake things up. David Grolman, the president of retail operations of William Hill US, was really excited about the events taking place:
“This was a big weekend for us with a soft opening last Saturday and the official opening today here in D.C. and another sportsbook of ours opening at Grand Victoria Casino in Elgin, Illinois. With no casinos in the D.C. area, this was a logical fit for us to team with a sports arena and its tenants to provide options to the betting public.”
However, not everything went as initially planned. Due to the situation regarding COVID-19, the William Hill sportsbook didn’t open in the arena itself – rather, it settled inside its ticket office.
“The box office has 15 windows and due to social distancing we have three or four writers doing the walk-up business,” Grolman said. “Then we have 10 kiosks that are six feet apart.”
On the other hand, this situation will not continue for very long. There are plans to open a full-fledged 20,000 square foot sportsbook by the autumn of 2020.
“With the D.C. opening, people will come in and make their bets and leave, whereas if at a casino or racetrack where a sportsbook is located, you will tend to hang out much longer,” Grolman continued.
“I’ve been really pleased with how our re-openings have been going across the country as we and sports come back from COVID-19. All of our rules and protocols are in place with social distancing markers on property as well as shields between bettors and tellers.”
Right now, the box office of William Hill will be available seven days a week, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. PT.
The first bets made on the grand opening day of William Hill sportsbook involved the Washington Capitals, NBA’s Mystics, and NBA’s Wizards.
There are plans to soon launch a William Hill app for the players from Washington, D.C.
