After signing the bill into law in May 2019, Indiana legalized sports betting and became a member of the prestigious club of Sports Betting States.
Launched legal remote gambling on September 1st, the Hoosier State had joined the ranks of states that offer mobile and online sports betting.
The first two that debuted on the same day. BetRivers Sportsbook launched through a partnership of Rush Street Interactive and French Lick Casino. And DraftKings through Ameristar East Chicago and in partnership with Penn National Gaming also launched their mobile offering, making Indiana the fifth state where customers can now place wagers on the Draftking sports betting app and website.
In October 2019, FanDual Sportsbook became the third online sports betting operating to join the pack, and launched in Indiana a sports betting site and mobile app through a partnership with Blue Chip Casino and Balterra Casino.
Adding to the mobile sports betting app action are the offers from brick-and-mortar casinos, racetracks and off-track betting parlours.
Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb cut the ribbon and placed Indiana’s first legal bet at Grand Racing and Casino in Shelbyville. Not coincidently, Gov. Holcomb placed his first wager on one of the Hoosier State’s sources of pride: NFL Francize Indianapolis Colts. He placed a $10 bet on the Colts to be Super Bowl Champions, but it didn’t end there. The Governor also placed a $10 wager on the Indiana Pacers to win the NBA, and another $10 on WNBA’s Indiana Fever to win that night’s match they played against the Minnesota Lynx.
A lot of bets have been placed in the State of Indiana since Governor Holcomb’s first $30-worth of wagers. September was a strong month for sports betting in Indiana, with $35 million in handle and $8.5 in revenue. And in October things kept going upwards, with a spike of 160% over September, with $91.7 million handle (this combines mobile and land-based). The revenue for Indiana in October from sports betting was $11.5 million.
Amongst the online sports betting providers, the DraftKings Sportsbook took the lion share of $39.3 million in handle, which is an astounding 43% of the state’s total. BetRivers was a distant second with only $6.3 million, and FanDual Sportsbook, which was launched only at the end of the month took $2.4 million in handle.
There is a respectable list of top companies in the sports-betting and casino industry that are in the process of a license application to join Indiana’s online sports-betting market. More companies that are likely to launch a sports-betting app in Indiana are: 888, Bet365, BetAmerica, Caesars, Fox Bet, MGM, William Hill and a few more that are not confirmed.
Some big land-based companies are also preparing to take a piece of the Hoosier State’s online sports-betting action, and many partnerships of big names in the gambling industry have been forming. To name just a few: Blue Chip Casino with FanDual Sportsbook, Harrah’s Hoosier Park with Scientific Games, Hollywood Casino Lawrenceburg with Kambi, Horseshoe Hammond and Horseshoe Southern Indiana Casinos with Scientific Games, Winner’s Circle Casinos with Scientific Games, Rising Star Casino Resort with Bet America and Wynn Resorts, and more.
So what’s next for online and mobile sports-betting in the Hoosier State? The bettors are having a great time and coming by the masses to enjoy the sports betting excitement in a safe, legal and regulated way. Operators are growing with huge revenues month on month, and the State of Indiana’s public stands to gain millions, and possibly billions soon in taxes. In Indiana, sports betting is a huge success, times will tell how huge it will become.
